Twenty per cent of jobs
According to a report dated 26 July 2026, monday.com announced a reduction of about 620 staff, roughly a fifth of its global team. A cut of this scale affects how a cloud product is built, sold and supported, not only its expense line.
SaaS growth traditionally followed subscriptions and user seats. Agents may do work without another human account, shifting prices towards work volume, compute use or outcomes.
Automation is not the only explanation
It would be simplistic to say one AI tool directly replaced each job. Investor expectations, revenue growth, sales costs, team design and earlier hiring all matter. AI still gives management an argument that a different team structure can deliver the same work.
The product question is whether monday.com can sell agents as useful services rather than interface add-ons, with reliability, permissions, audit and understandable pricing.
A signal for Israel's ecosystem
As a prominent Israeli software company, monday.com's changes affect the wider labour market. Hundreds of experienced people face personal and social costs, while some may strengthen other firms or found new projects.
Customers should watch support and development continuity, investors the conversion of savings into sustainable margin, and workers demand for skills that complement automation. “AI layoffs” starts the discussion rather than explaining everything.
Per-user licences meet digital labour
An agent that creates items, evaluates data and triggers actions is not a normal seat. The vendor pays model costs while the customer expects less manual work, pushing SaaS towards blends of subscription, consumption and outcome pricing.
Customers still need predictable bills. Useful pricing shows what an agent did, what it consumed and which limit requires consent, linking measurement, permission, invoicing and budget control.
Layoffs affect support and product memory
Smaller teams improve near-term cost metrics while removing customer and system knowledge. Cuts in support, security or infrastructure may only be noticed during incidents through stability and repair times.
Remaining staff take wider responsibility under uncertainty. A good transition narrows priorities, assigns every agent an owner and measures customer impact rather than using AI as a generic explanation for savings.
A safe agent needs narrow permissions
Work platforms hold business plans, personal data, contracts and communication. Agent errors can reach further than a bad answer, so customers must constrain sources and actions with audit, rollback and human approval.
Narrow agents for reports, triage or deadline checks are easier to test and value than a universal one. monday.com's structured data is an advantage and a responsibility not to unleash unpredictable models into critical work.
Customers should monitor service quality
Users should track pricing, support, integrations and data handling and keep exports, automation documentation and downtime plans for critical work. Layoffs are a supplier-risk signal, not an automatic reason to leave.
Growth, margin, retention and compute spending in coming quarters will show whether the change was a product transformation or a fast market response, while the Israeli ecosystem absorbs released talent.
Quarters after the reorganisation will show the result
AI revenue, gross margin, infrastructure cost, innovation speed and retention will test promised productivity. Headcount falls immediately; support and security effects appear later, so assessment needs several periods and concrete product and pricing changes.
Where cuts occurred and which skills the company still hires will indicate transformation versus broad saving. Better economics together with stable service, not investor language alone, would confirm meaningful change.
