France's A10 Wirelessly Charges Cars and Trucks While They Drive

A 1.5-kilometre stretch of the A10 near Paris uses coils from Israel's Electreon. According to the consortium, independent tests measured average transfer above 200 kW and peaks above 300 kW at motorway speed.

A short section works on a live motorway

A consortium led by VINCI Autoroutes with Electreon and research and construction partners opened 1.5 km of dynamic wireless charging southwest of Paris. Road coils transfer power to receivers under test cars, vans, buses and trucks at normal speed. It is demonstration infrastructure in open traffic, not a continuously electrified motorway.

University laboratories reportedly measured averages above 200 kW and peaks above 300 kW, enough to exceed a loaded truck's instant consumption. The active-zone length, receiver, efficiency and repeatability still matter. A short section proves transfer; a corridor's economics depend on a much larger network and equipped fleet.

A magnetic field replaces physical contact

Induction between road coils and a vehicle receiver activates for an authorised vehicle segment by segment. It avoids a surface rail or pantograph and can serve several vehicle types, but requires roadworks, precise installation, transfer losses and standard receivers.

Efficiency changes with clearance, alignment and speed. The system must survive rain, heat, frost and axle loads without damaging the road. Mechanical and temperature testing and maintainability are as important as electrical power.

Freight may gain the most

Long-haul electric trucks need large batteries and charging stops. Energy while driving could reduce battery weight, carry more cargo and cut downtime, especially on strategic hills, port approaches or busy corridors rather than every kilometre.

A smaller battery makes sense only with a reliable network. Infrastructure and fleets must develop together. A public corridor, common standard, committed carriers and high utilisation can spread investment; without coordination there will be expensive pavement and few receivers.

Cost must be compared with chargers and batteries

An electric road needs excavation, coils, electronics, grid connection, control and maintenance but may reduce batteries, fast-charging hubs and fleet downtime. Economics belong to the whole corridor and lifetime, including traffic, energy sales, grid peaks and billing.

Several trucks still create high simultaneous demand. Control needs metering, roaming and cybersecurity, and a closed protocol creates vendor dependence. Receiver and billing standards are as important to scale as coil efficiency.

The pilot must answer operating questions

Beyond power, tests need availability, failures, road repairs, electromagnetic compatibility, worker safety and grid-to-battery efficiency over winter, summer and heavy axle passages. An October demonstration is one data point; a corridor decision needs long-term independent methods.

The A10 benefits from a strong road operator and academic testing. Electreon also has projects in several countries and static and dynamic variants. Commercial scale needs larger paid projects and evidence of which use,depot, bus route or motorway,is most economical.

A Czech corridor should begin with a fleet

A Czech project should start from predictable buses, factory shuttles or freight flows and compare static charging, battery swapping, overhead lines and induction before selecting a road section. Technology without a contracted fleet cannot generate utilisation or decision-grade data.

The A10 is a real milestone: high power transferred in a live motorway setting under independent testing. It does not prove all motorways should be electrified. The next value lies in longer sections, standards, maintenance cost and paying trucks.
