The community numbers fewer than one thousand
According to the JTA report, fewer than one thousand Jews live in a country of about 625,000 people. Active Jewish life is centered mainly in Podgorica and the coastal town of Budva. Some members have roots in former Yugoslavia, while others arrived from Russia, Ukraine, Israel, and elsewhere. Several languages are therefore part of daily life.
The new center is taking concrete shape
A Star of David is built into the architecture in Podgorica rather than added as a temporary sign. The center is intended to provide cultural programming and a permanent home. A visible public space helps a small community organize events, preserve local memory, and introduce Jewish life to the wider society.
Safety is no longer taken for granted
Community leaders describe protests against Israel, online hostility, and several incidents involving Israeli visitors. The precise nature of each case requires investigation, but the cumulative effect is clear. The community monitors risks more closely and spends resources on security that could otherwise support education and culture.
Internal differences have not disappeared
Montenegro has both a traditional Orthodox congregation and a more liberal community, and relations between them are not always close. A new building cannot resolve disagreement by itself. It may create opportunities to cooperate on practical needs such as visitor support, education, historical memory, and communication with state institutions.
