Critical does not mean only geological scarcity
A material may be relatively available in the earth’s crust while its mining, refining, or conversion into a specific product is concentrated in a few countries. Risk appears where a disruption cannot be replaced quickly. Supply policy therefore covers the entire chain from mine to pure powder, alloy, or magnet.
Waste is a mixture, not a ready made mine
A used battery or electronic device contains valuable elements beside plastic, glue, and hazardous substances. Recycling economics depend on accurate dismantling, concentration, and output purity. Technology must show that recovered material meets a manufacturing specification and that energy and chemical use do not consume its value.
Sensors and chemistry must meet logistics
Advanced measurement can identify material composition, but a processing line remains empty without a stable flow of waste. A company needs contracts with collection points, manufacturers, and processors. Traceability also helps prove origin, recycled content, and safe handling of the unused residue.
A pilot must reveal the cost of each recovered unit
Laboratory yield alone is insufficient. Investors and customers need cost per kilogram, quality stability, processing capacity, and the value of secondary streams. A meaningful pilot uses real and variable waste. Only then can it show whether a process competes with primary material when market prices change.
