The first step requires precise language
A general statement that a person was not always good is easy to say and difficult to test. Teshuvah begins specifically: what did I do, whom did it hurt, and how did I excuse my conduct? Precision does not require public humiliation. It separates actual responsibility from a vague feeling of guilt.
An apology is not a demand for quick forgiveness
A person who caused harm should listen to its effect and repair it where possible. They cannot decide when another person must stop feeling angry. An apology focused only on personal relief can place the burden on the injured person again. Recognizing their experience and accepting consequences matters more.
Change needs new conditions
Willpower alone is often insufficient. Someone repeating the same mistake can alter the environment, ask for accountability, or prepare a different response in advance. Rabbinic texts also test teshuvah by whether a person chooses differently in a similar situation. Repeated practice turns a promise into a new habit.
Return does not mean returning to the past
A damaged relationship cannot always regain its former shape, and some consequences remain. Teshuvah does not promise to erase history. It offers the possibility of accepting responsibility and stopping repeated harm. The language of return points toward values, not back to a time when nothing had happened.
